Antique Black Forest Carved Hanging Game Plaques
Beautiful matched pair of Gilt Hanging Wooden Carved Plaques. Depicting a meticulously detailed hunting scene of a stag and a pheasant, framed by oak leaves and foliage.
Black Forest carvings typically feature trees and foliage along with forest animals. Contrary to popular belief, they are the invention of Swiss carvers and come from the town of Brienz. The Bavarian Black Forest in southwest Germany is where they are thought to have originated. By the turn of the 20th century, it had expanded from its modest origins as a cottage industry in the early 1800s to become the main source of employment for a whole skilled population.
The carvings were displayed in numerous worldwide exhibitions, including the London Great Exhibition of 1851, the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, and the Exposition Universelle Paris.
